Pune: In what turned out to be an ordeal for an IT professional from Bangalore arrested by Pune police’s cyber cell for posting an obscene profile of Maratha warrior Shivaji on Orkut website, was set free after 50 days behind bars.
This case of mistaken identity caused acute pain and embarrassment to the 27-year-old software engineer — Laxman Kailas was picked up from his Bangalore residence on August 31 when a wrong lead resulted in the police overkill. According to sources, cyber cell team was misled iwhen Airtel whose internet connection was used to prepare the controversial profile, gave a wrong IP number of computer belonging to Laxman.
Meanwhile, the investigating team, acting on additional inputs from Google and Yahoo, arrested three more persons from Bangalore — Kumar Reddy, Harish Shetty and Manjunath Gowd.
Interrogation of these three indicated that they did not know Laxman. Further probe established that Laxman was not involved. He was freed last Saturday after police gave a clean chit to him before the court. PTI
